New infrastructure for the Barraba Rugby Club

INCLUSIVITY ON THE AGENDA AT BARRABA RUGBY CLUB

Barraba Rugby Club is set for game-changing infrastructure upgrades thanks to $678,073 from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said the funds will be used to provide change room facilities for women at the club and upgrade the existing clubhouse.

“Barraba Rugby Club has a long and proud history with the community backing their team through thick and thin as they face rivals from bigger towns,” Mr Anderson said.

“The recent Australia Day Awards saw two club members recognised for Citizen of the Year and Young Achiever of the Year which is credit to how highly the club is regarded by the community.

Barraba Rugby has a big issue at the moment accommodating both women’s and men’s games with only one home and one away change room currently available.

Women’s and men’s teams currently share change rooms meaning scheduling can be difficult and matches have to be scheduled around the use of the facilities, throwing out any possibility of a big gala day which would highlight both the men’s and women’s competitions.

Women’s rugby has been around for 4 years in the Central North competition so I am thrilled that this funding will provide the women’s team with the facilities they need to boost participation and keep Barraba rugby strong.

The funding will also be used to extend the existing clubhouse which is great news for the local community.

The clubhouse is a real asset to the town and is used by members by a range of events like school athletics days, junior rugby, sponsorship evenings and events like the drought relief event held in early 2020 which saw musicians like Amber Lawrence and Andrew Farris head to Barraba and throw a party for the community following a tough few years.

Thank you to Club President Simon Koopman and Brianna Mack for their hard work in getting this funding for the Barraba community.”
