History Notes - visit from the Baldock's

History Notes

This week has also been busy for a number of our members with the beginning of the clean-out of the society storage area. A number of things thought to have been lost have been found, especially 2nd hand books to sell on the market stall. A truck load of them, so there will be fresh books on the stall on Saturday week - come and have a browse.

There are a number of photos stored up there and now someone has to collate them and put them into storage so everyone has access to them. Some readers will remember the hospital photo that appeared in the first Barraba Gazette, two nurses with Mr. Simpson. It is not in the hospital history for some reason possibly because we did not know where it was!

We had some Baldock descendants visiting the museum this week- they found a little bit of Baldock history in Nancy's notes but really needed the Quirindi book to trace the family back. Unfortunately, I could not look it up for them as that book has been stolen and it is now out of print unless someone has a copy that they do not want any longer.

Two thoughts from last week's News caught my attention; first the modern photo of Pearce's old store advertising videos for hire as it clings to life. I notice there is no little building beside it so I may now be able to win an argument with one of our citizens! Thankyou Brian. The oysters are another matter. I have seen it advertised in a photo but doubt if they would be still fresh on arrival in Barraba all those years ago.

The other item of interest appeared on the back page - Sunlight soap. I wonder how many people still use it and isn't it hard to find in the shops - great for hard, dirty jobs and for washing one’s hands at the sink.

Finally, for this week I have found a little book called Punch which is a collection of humorous situations. The first is an employer sitting at his desk interviewing the office boy. "Isn't it rather strange that your grandfather should be seriously ill every time there is a big football match on." The office boy replies "Yessir. I sometimes wonder if he's shammin,".
