Rugby Union News

The girls’ game against Scone started the day’s events. Scone were confident of success as they came through the gate, but were confronted by a very determined Barraba/Gwydir outfit.

With the game only 3 minutes old Amie Middlemiss crossed for the home side 5-0, shortly after Scone attacked and scored beside the posts and converted for a 5-7 lead to Barraba after the first quarter.

Ally Johnson was next to score after a good lead up by the forwards for a 12-7 lead, with the forwards breaking tackles and causing problems for the visitors. This resulted in a try to Jess Hall from a neat pop pass from Abbie Mallise for a 17-7 lead at half time. The girls continued their strong play in both attack and defence and good backing-up when Abbie Mallise gave the final pass to Katie Fisher to cross for a 24-7 score line. Not to be outdone, Abbie Mallise barged over next to the posts for the next try, 29-7 and a very strong game.

With a further try to Abbie and Emily Kelso the final score was 41-7. Well done girls, you showed some very good signs for the future. The game was controlled by Bruce Walsh, 1st half and Luke Davis in the 2nd. Well done to both.

The Men’s game did not start well for the home team with Rafter kicking the ball dead for a penalty over the try line, allowing Scone to work their way up the field with a succession of penalties, but good defence saw them held out.

Barraba/Gwydir worked their way down the field with good backing up, only to see the ball dropped with the line wide open. But soon after Rafter slotted a penalty for a 3-0 lead after 23 minutes of play. A kick over the Barraba backs by the Scone team half put the home side under pressure, but they managed to hold out with some stern defence. Shortly after, Abra made a break and passed to Josh Austin to run away for a good try 8-0.

Just before half-time, some strong play by the forwards saw the slick backline score another try out wide for a 13-0 half-time score. Barraba, a man short, after Crouch was marched in second half.

The second half started with a Rafter try and conversion after good backing up from the half-way for a 20-0 score line.

Play continued to give one side an advantage until a mistake or good defence forced an error. Four more tries to L Mack, Webber, Sweeney and Rogers saw the score blow out to 42-0. The win showed a big improvement in ball handling, defence and support play.

Next Saturday Barraba are home to Quirindi, ladies at 1.30 and men at 2.30.

Points.
