Ram/Rats win against the Pirates

8th June 2022

Rugby Union News

The Ram/Rats travelled to Pirates last week to lock horns with the Pirates, the biggest and strongest club in the zone. They were expecting a tough encounter and as the score tells us it was that type of game. Pirates started strongly with their forwards being dominant in the first half, with the visitors making some mistakes which proved costly as they ran in three tries to one during the game.

According to the supporters, it was a very enjoyable game and kept the crowd amused with the fluctuating score line. The visitors played with not a lot of possession and were forced to defend for a fair bit of the game. The second half saw the forwards lift the intensity.

With the final siren sounding Barraba received a penalty for Rafter to put the ball between the posts for a 19-17 win to Barraba/Gwydir. That put a big smile on the dial of the ex-pirates coach who is coaching Barraba.

Men’s Best and fairest points went to J. Rafter for a try and 4 penalties for the Players Player award.

  1. Point to Robinson who plays above his weight
  2. W. Robinson who leads by example every game
  3. N. Sweeney and G. Sloan

This result is one of the highlights for the Club for a number of seasons and gave their supporters plenty to smile about. The style of rugby the team is playing is very good to watch with the slick backs showing plenty of pace from good possession from the forwards and should draw good crowds to their home games.

The Girl’s game saw the visitors struggling for numbers and were helped out by some of the Gunnedah players. The girls are enjoying the game and also producing some good rugby. There are no results of the game or any points during the game. Second place might be the result owing to a number of players being unavailable.

Points for the game were;

Players Player      G. McDouall

  1. N. Philpott
  2. K. Newell

There is no game next weekend owing to the Annual Country Zone Championships to be played in Tamworth. So, a bye weekend before a home game v Walcha on the 18th June.
