This week's History Notes

6th June 2023

History Notes

Well done to those who did the notes last week.  The extra photos of the Cobbadah Hotel show just how close the hotel was to the road and where the original post office was situated.

Next weekend will be the June markets and it looks as though the weather will be fine.  The last markets saw some customers arrive before 9.30am so we have moved the time back to 9am start and the finish to 12.30pm.  There will be live music by the Edward Street Trio so come along and sing with them.

This week I had intended to mark Sorry Day and this week’s Myall Creek Ceremony but have found some more information which needs time to research and compare with what is already in the pamphlets in my collection.  Hopefully they will have a good crowd to mark the anniversary of this horrible event.

Recently I have had to review and re-organise past history notes – some of the old ones are dated and some are not but the range of topics is varied and only occasionally re-published.  In 2005 I have found the first notes of the year reminding readers of the Show approaching and the first meeting to be hold on 25th February.

A couple of items included the 30th anniversary of the Adams Lookout opening and the 70th anniversary of the Bridge and the Bowling Club.  There was a request for a photo of the opening of the bridge – we still do not have photos of the opening and as I doubt there is a plaque on the bridge, it is very probable that there was no official opening.  Does anyone have a photo of the bridge under construction?  It would probably be a postcard unless Percy Williams took a photo.

There are sure to be more copies of early history notes when I finally get the office tidy or at least in some order so I can find things – hopefully there may be some interesting items published in the 1980s and 1990s which everyone has forgotten about and can be re-run for the younger readers.

Hopefully back to normal next week.
