NSW GOVERNMENT COMMITTED TO TAMWORTH’S WATER SECURITY

The NSW Government is forging ahead with plans to secure Tamworth’s water security despite the Federal Government deferring funding for the New Dungowan Dam.

Minister for Lands and Water and Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said the NSW Government has reserved 50 per cent of the funding for the dam and remains committed to delivering water security for Tamworth and the Peel valley.

“We are frustrated with the delays but nothing is ever easy - we are committed to the New Dungowan Dam and we will continue to work on a way forward to deliver water security for our region,” Mr Anderson said. “Water security is one of the biggest issues impacting regional NSW. That is why NSW is continuing to work on a path forward to deliver the New Dungowan Dam which we know is part of the plan to secure Tamworth’s future water security. The Environmental Impact Statement for the New Dungowan Dam has gone on display today and NSW will continue with early works and the construction of the pipeline to ensure this project is shovel ready by 2023. Construction of Stage One of the Pipeline from the Calala Treatment Plant in Tamworth to the Dungowan Showgrounds began in February this year and is progressing well. Work is expected to be completed in early 2023. Geo-technical investigations at the dam site are continuing and extensive work is being carried out on the final design of the dam. Although the Federal Government has deferred funding for the New Dungowan Dam seeking more information, NSW will continue working hard to get this project shovel ready.  I am seeking further clarification from the Federal Government on what further information is needed for them to ensure funding is available next year for construction to commence.”
