Rugby Union against Gunnedah

4th May 2022

Rugby Union Club News

The Barraba/Gwydir team took on Gunnedah at Bingara on the ANZAC weekend, with changing weather conditions, with storms, then showers on and off during the afternoon.

The girls’ game started the day with the much stronger visitors proving much too strong for only 10 of our girls, so the visitors had the advantage of being able to change players while the Barraba/Gwydir girls had to play the full game.

Sideline reporter, Brownie, said the girls tried hard, but were overwhelmed by a stronger unit, with some missed tackles, resulting in points. They seem to be improving their phase play and lack the pace of their rivals.

Best and Fairest awards were as follows;

Player’s Player Alysha Cox

3 points K Fisher

2 points Kaila Gillogoly

1 point Ally Johnson

In the break before the Men’s game a minutes’ silence for Ruby Peak was held and observed by the crowd.

There was an abundance of refreshments and nourishment.

In the Men’s game there was not a lot in it, with Barraba/Gwydir taking the lead early with a penalty to Rafter for a 3-0 lead.

Play seesawed up and down the field with defence a strong point by both sides, but just before half-time Gunnedah were able to cross for a try for a half-time score of 5-3 to the visitors. The second stanza saw much of the same with no quarter given by either team but Gunnedah finally crossed for a second try for a 10-3 lead.

Barraba tried hard with plenty of phase play and pressed the Gunnedah line but could not breach the defence which left the final score 10-3. The crowd were pleased by the locals effort.

Two players who stood out were J. Bachelor and A Crouch, specially in defence. They are from the home country and will bolster the local team.

Awards were;

Player’s players  J. Bachelor and A. Crouch

3 points J. Bachelor

2 points  A. Crouch

1 point  M. ONeil and A. Abra

Last week was a bye for the club and we play Scone at Barraba on Saturday 7th May, so we’re looking forward to seeing plenty of support for the home team here at Barraba.
