Tamworth District Orchid Society is holding its Spring display at Tamworth Shopping World- 9am Thursday 24th September to 1pm Saturday 26 September.

If you would like to see a lovely display of locally grown orchids and talk to people who grow Orchids in Tamworth this is the place to do it.

Entry is free and the local Orchid Society members would be delighted to see you and talk about their orchids and growing techniques.

the Tamworth Orchid Society meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6.30pm for 7pm start at St Stephen’s Church Hall in Mathews Street Tamworth.  The secretary is Ann Van Hest on 0488915966. 

 Orchid Care for Beginners

Orchids are not generally considered beginner-friendly plants, but they are easier to nurture when you understand their unique needs. Here are some key points to keep in mind for orchid care beginners:

Choose the Right Orchid: Select an orchid type that is suitable for your home conditions. Research different types to find one that will thrive in your environment.

Pot Selection: Use a pot with good drainage to prevent root rot. The pot should comfortably hold the roots without being too large to allow for expansion.

Watering: Water orchids when the roots look silvery-gray, not plump and green. Avoid standing water and ensure the substrate is dry between waterings.

Humidity: Place your orchid over a humidity tray to maintain the right moisture levels.

Light: Orchids prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, especially in northern Australia.

Temperature: Keep your orchid in a temperate spot, away from extreme heat or cold.

Fertilization: Use a long-term controlled-release fertilizer during the growth period and stop during the resting phase.

Repotting: Repot your orchid in mid-spring after it has finished flowering. Remove old bulbs and pot each of the younger bulbs individually
