Council Meeting Update – Tuesday 8 September 2026

Here is an overview of outcomes from tonight’s Ordinary Meeting of Tamworth Regional Council.

• Councillors tonight elected Cr Russell Webb as Mayor and Cr Jeff Budd as Deputy Mayor, following the conduct of elections at the Ordinary Council Meeting. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor will serve a term of two years, or until the next Local Government Election, in accordance with the Local Government Act.
• Councillors tonight adopted the Terms of Reference for the Mara Ngali Partnership Committee and endorsed Council representatives to the Committee.  The Terms of Reference supports the ongoing partnership between Council and the Tamworth Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (TACCO) to oversee and guide progress on Closing the Gap initiatives across the region.
• Councillors tonight noted correspondence from the Local Government Grants Commission advising that Council's Financial Assistance Grants allocation for 2026/2027 is estimated to increase by 5.6 per cent. The funding forms an important component of Council's revenue base and supports the ongoing delivery of services, infrastructure maintenance and community programs.
• Council adopted the Tamworth Central Sports Fields Masterplan 2026 which will be used to guide planning and investment within the precinct. The precinct includes the Gipps Street Sporting Fields, Carter Street/Riverside Sporting Complex, and Plain Street Sporting Fields. Following initial community consultation with groups that use the precinct, a draft masterplan was developed and placed on public exhibition for 28 days with 96 feedback responses being made which helped shape the final plan.
• Councillors tonight noted the successful implementation of key initiatives under the Tamworth Regional Parking Strategy, including increased parking turnover in the CBD, 16 additional accessible parking options, 203 less metered parking spaces, improved enforcement efficiency, and upgrades that are enhancing the overall parking experience for residents, workers, and visitors. The update also highlighted planned improvements to the Griffin Avenue and Hands of Fame car parks, funded through parking revenue and enforcement income.
