Barraba Central School 1975 1st Form 50-year Reunion

By Geoff Hagan

The King’s Birthday Long weekend in 2025 saw a gathering of around forty classmates out of about ninety, and around twenty spouses.  They all came together at the Barraba Golf Club around 5pm on Saturday evening, 7th June.  The Barraba Central School 1975 1st Form 50-year reunion was on the way after six months of planning.

Fifty years ago, students from Upper Horton Public School, St Joseph’s Convent School and Barraba Central School Primary Department were thrown into a big melting pot called Barraba Central School Secondary Department.  Many also came from other places as their parents started work at Barraba Asbestos Mine.

The night was filled with eating, commemorating, celebrating and – no doubt – stretched truths. The night finished around midnight.

The Sunday started at 9am with a dedication of a dining table and chairs in memory of six deceased classmates. The dining set will be placed in the Polkadot Coffee Shop.  A plaque with names of the deceased is placed on it.  Rev Matthew Hearne conducted the dedication.

Then it was up to the High School where it all began for memories and to see how things have changed in fifty years.  Thank you, Sue Russell for the tour.

The classmates and their spouses then returned to the Golf Club for a BBQ lunch and leftover desserts from the previous night.

After an afternoon of reminiscing and more storytelling, goodbyes and farewells were exchanged around 4pm.
