History Notes - Gulf Creek athletics carnival

1st December 2021

History Notes

The historical society has been rather quiet this week – no new enquiries.  We remind those members who have not paid their membership for 2021/22 to please do so.

As most members would know we were proposing to have a Christmas gathering over a finger food lunch on 22nd December.  This date has proved to be impossible for a number of people and so it has been decided to try for the 15th December, a couple of days before the markets  - please let us know – Carol or Margaret – your thoughts on this date.

There is usually someone at the museum on Friday morning so if the gate is open there will be someone in the Dean Room – mostly deep in the old newspapers.

The Gulf Creek file has revealed a little more about the Oldham family as they are listed there in 1897 – William, his third wife MaryAnn, and youngest daughter, Elizabeth, are listed on a petition.  It is also noted that he had an account at the local store in 1904, so the hunt is on to find the Gulf Creek Store Account Book which is in the collection somewhere.

Also while checking the Gulf Creek records there is the story about an athletic carnival.  A 100 yard dash was won by Charles Mallise and a shorter race was won by Vera Mallise.  There was also a “throwing down the wicket” competition, broom throwing and a children’s potato race.  It must have been quite a fun day.
