Some history of the Banoon School
Historical Society Notes - Banoon School
The first school was conducted in the Banoon huts while the building was being built in 1954. It was a weatherboard building consisting of a large room and library, storeroom and verandah. It was built on the Banoon - Burindi road near the branch road which runs to Orana, Calvalda, etc. It was close to the Louis’ property.
The reason for the setting up of the school was the new soldier settlement blocks on Banoon. After the closure of the school in March, 1966, the building was moved to Barraba School where the pupils were also taken by bus.
There were only three teachers:
Tony Stortinbecker who married Ros Barwick (daughter of M. & A. Barwick).
Denis Gill (1961) who married Kath Reading.
