Sunday Sewers gift to Garvin House

A happy and friendly group of approximately 7 ladies meet at the Barraba Potters and Craft Guild on Sundays to produce beautiful items of sewing, patchwork craft and knitting.

A few months ago, Kim Peake, Barraba Health Service Manager, mentioned to the Local Health Committee that she’d like to have some knee rugs for the residents of Garvin House - something colourful and attractive that each resident could select and call their own.

That request from Kim was answered by the ‘Sunday Sewers’ who meet every Sunday at the craft guild to produce items for charity, for sale in the Gallery and for their own personal use.

Last Sunday the group made a presentation to Kim of 27 quilts and 14 sensory rugs (sometimes called fiddle rugs) often used by dementia residents. All of the fabric was donated to the Potters and Craft Guild, with most fabric for these quilts from the family of Lyn Forbes, who had been a resident of Garvin House.

The sewers also had 14 quilts, ready to donate to the Neonatal Unit at Tamworth Hospital, for new born premature babies.

In recent times they have made blankets for Inala House, (Inala House in Tamworth offers dedicated accommodation for patients receiving treatment at the North West Cancer Centre and the Tamworth Women’s Refuge. They are also making cuddle hearts and feeders for the Bingara Nursing Home and fiddle mats for the Manilla Nursing Home.

Everyone is welcome to join this group of ladies. They are at the Gallery from 9.30am until 3.30pm on a Sunday. Contact Rosemary on 0428892407 for more information.
