Junior Rugby Carnival a great success

16th May 2023

Rugby Union Report

The weekend was topped off by another well organised Annual Junior Carnival at Barraba. Teams came from Coonabarabran, Sone, Moree, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Tamworth, Armidale, Inverell, Quirindi and Walcha for the age groups of under 8s, 10s and 11s. All up there would have been between 460 and 480 youngsters running around having a great time. The senior players and a junior under 16 player provided the referees for the day and also helped the youngsters during the game.

Brian Coote had his drone camera for some photos of the event which show the number of vehicles that transported these kids from near and far. This Carnival is one of the most popular in the north of the state and says a lot for the committee and the fund it brings to town.

The senior rugby travelled to Gunnedah for their game and came home with a very good 24-0 win. Reports of good, strong forward work allowed the backs to direct the play into their territory, which enabled the Rams to put more points on the board and hold Gunnedah to nil.

Barraba’s biggest problem is an injury to Thabisco Mzisa who has a fracture in his face and spent the night in Tamworth Hospital. So, his season may be finished after a Player Players Award the previous week and 2 points this week.

McKenna at 5/8th ran the game with his deft placement of kicks during the game and distribution to his backs who showed plenty of ball handling skills during the game.

2 Points Thabisco Mzisa

1 Point   Disin McKenna and Connor Roberts

The girls game saw Gunnedah come out easy winners and many more players to pick from. But the story was the girls thoroughly enjoyed the game.

This coming week sees Barraba at home for Round 6 with a team we have not seen for a couple of years, playing at Bingara.
