BARRABA RAMS RUGBY UNION CLUB – LADIES’ DAY MATCH REPORT

What a day at the Rams' home ground as Barraba hosted the Pirates for our Annual Ladies’ Day! With a big crowd, a buzzing sideline, and three grades of rugby on show, the atmosphere was electric from the first whistle to the last.

The women’s game kicked things off in style. From the opening moments, it was a fast, physical match that was exciting to watch. Barraba held their own in a back-and-forth battle, with tries from Brooke McKinnon, Jessica Kelso, Lily Bradshaw and Leilani Tevaga. The girls put together some impressive phases and held strong possession, with Brooke McKinnon delivering crunching tackles and the forward pack holding steady in the scrums. In the end, Pirates just edged ahead with some quick moves, taking the win 33–22 — but the Rams women walked off proud after a strong team performance.

Third grade followed, and although it was their debut as a team with no training together, they attacked the game head on. The boys gave it everything and played with grit, spirit and plenty of heart. Michael Walker and Jock Mallise were workhorses during the game, and the team’s only try, scored by Ben Whatman, was the result of a great build-up where everyone dug in to create space and attack with purpose. The Pirates took the match 41–5, but the Rams gave the crowd something to cheer for and showed there’s a lot of potential in this new side.

Reserve grade closed out the day with a tense and tough clash. The Pirates scored early, but Oisin McKenna slotted a penalty in the 6th minute to steady things. The first half was scrappy, with some mistakes from both teams, but Pirates snuck in another converted try right before the break to lead 10–3. The Rams came out fired up in the second half, and in the 47th minute, Isaac Devine crashed over for a cracking try, which was converted by McKenna to tie things up. The last 30 minutes were a battle — both teams had chances, but Barraba’s defence stood tall, especially when the game was on the line.

It was a massive day of footy, full of passion, pride, and community. Thanks to everyone who came along to celebrate and cheer on the Rams — especially the women who we honoured on Ladies’ Day.

We will see you back on the home stage this weekend where the Rams take on Inverell for our Memorial Day.
