Rugby season kicks off with Barraba/Moree

Rugby News
Barraba Rugby is back for 2025 and the first game of the season took place on Saturday 3 May. Unfortunately, the women didn’t get a game as Moree had to forfeit due to a lack of numbers meaning their first game will be this Saturday against Gunnedah.
However, the men took on Moree reserve grade in what turned out to be a very competitive game. The game kicked off at 3:15 with both teams looking to make a statement after Moree’s big win against Gunnedah the week prior. After some great defence from the entire team, keeping Moree out for the first 15 minutes Barraba secured a penalty right in front of the sticks. Oisin McKenna lined up and slotted the ball over to get Barraba on the board first, taking the score to 3-0. Moree didn’t take long to retaliate scoring another three tries with two conversions, taking the scoreline to 3- 21.
Barraba managed to bring themselves back into the game after some big hit ups from Jack Myers and Noah Theofanou created some space to the left for the backs. The ball made its way through the hands to Cooper Chapman who scored in the corner. This great bit of rugby was followed up by another great kick from Oisin McKenna to take the score to 10-21. Moree managed to get one more converted try in before the half time whistle, taking the half time score to 10-26. After half time the Rams came out ready to put on a show and they certainly did that. The forwards worked hard in their set pieces which allowed the backs to use their pace, allowing Liam Mack to link up with Chook Townsend and get him over the line twice in the second half. With both tries being scored in the corner it made it a tough kick for Oisin, but he got one of the two over, taking the score to 22-29 after Moree caught Barraba napping for one more try. The final score ended at 22-29.
This game is a promising start for the Barraba Rams, who are showcasing a young team compared to previous ones but if this is the first game we are sure to see great things moving forward.
Points for the day were as follows;
3 – Cody ‘Chook’ Townsend
2- Rudi Hart
1- Oisin McKenna
Players Player – Harrison Davies
This weekend will see the Rams travel to Gunnedah where the women will take on the devils first at 2:20, followed by the men at 3:15. We hope to see as much green and white there as possible!
