William Kentridge Exhibition

Thought provoking Kentridge on exhibition
One of the most powerful voices in art today, William Kentridge is best known for evocative stop-motion videos of charcoal drawings. Tamworth Regional Gallery has transformed part of their exhibition space to present William Kentridge: I Am Not Me the Horse is Not Mine, an Art Gallery of New South Wales touring exhibition, from Saturday 7 September to Sunday 3 November.
Kentridge’s art is linked to the social conditions of his home in South Africa, while also speaking to broader themes such as colonialism, creativity and the fleeting nature of identity. His artworks draw connections between art, ideology, history and memory, with his practice revealing the ways in which ideas and images echo across time and between different cultures.
Enormously influential, Kentridge’s artworks can be found in the collections of major museums around the world including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Tate, London; Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, New York; Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Haus der Kunst, Munich; and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
Regional communities across New South Wales now have the unprecedented opportunity to experience a major work by one of the world’s most celebrated living artists, touring to Tamworth from the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Director of Tamworth Regional Gallery and Museums, Bridget Guthrie says “We are honoured to host Kentridge’s exhibition. It’s an incredibly impactful artwork in the form of stop-motion animation. Even for those in our community that aren’t as familiar with art in this format, it will still be quite fascinating and thought-provoking”.
I Am Not Me the Horse is Not Mine is regarded as one of the artist’s most ambitious and celebrated moving image works, creating an immersive experience for onlookers.
The exhibition will officially open to the public this Saturday, with a free-to-attend curator’s talk with Nicholas Chambers, Art Gallery of New South Wales senior curator of modern and contemporary international art, occurring on Friday 6 September at 1:30pm.
This project is proudly supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW’s Blockbusters Funding initiative.
